Biolinguistica o glottobiologia? Il giudizio della glottotecnica

Graziadio Isaia Ascoli - Linguista, glottologo (1829 - 1907)
Graziadio Isaia Ascoli - Linguista, glottologo (1829 - 1907)

1) Bio-  si trova in composti dotti, derivati dal greco o formati modernamente, e significa «vita», «essere vivente» e simili. Il greco βίoς = «che vive»;

1)    glott-  significa lingua;
2)    -bio-      significa vita;
3)    -logia     significa discorso

a)    se teniamo in considerazione la lunga e valida tradizione degli studi condotti dalla glottologia;
b)    se riteniamo fondamentale il fatto che la  lingua è un fenomeno psicofonetico e che il punto di partenza (o di articolazione) dei suoni appartenenti al linguaggio vocale è la glottide, mentre la lingua (come organo) è solo uno dei vari accessori di quella cassa di risonanza a forma variabile che è l’apparato di fonazione;
c)    Se riteniamo importante i contributi della biologia, della fisica, della chimica, delle neuroscienze e della neurolinguistica allo studio della lingua;
d)    se pensiamo all’aderenza che il termine glottobiologia ha con sociobiologia;
e)    se riteniamo, come è vero, esservi una maggiore correttezza glottotecnica nel termine glottobiologia, cosa che non si riscontra nel termine biolinguistica;

Biolinguistica o glottobiologia? – Introduzione

Biolinguistics or glottobiology? The opinion of the glottotechnique

The necessity to coin and to prefer the term ‘glottobiologia‘ (glottobiology), in alternative at the term biolinguistics, has been due to the fact that this last is not  acceptable from the ‘glottotecnica’ (glottotechnique) and it is not at all evocative of the glottis and of its principal role in the production of the vocality of the system called ‘language’. Besides it is unacceptable that some studies of ‘glottogenesi’ (glottogenesis), as those that the ‘glottobiologia’ takes upon oneself and that are executed on the biological bases of the language, can be part of the ‘glottogonia’ (glottogony), it was not other for the attention that this science addresses preferably to the onomatopoeia. And then there is of more:  it is acceptable the thought of whom believes the term linguist too generic  and evocative of an organ whose primary function, as we have said, is everything other thing (Giulio Soravia, Storia del linguaggio, Garzanti, Milano 1976, p. 41). To everything this there is to add that the term  biolinguistica (biolinguistics), that is a compound noun, doesn’t respond to the canons of the compound nouns formation.

We remember however that there is who very simply points out the studies, of which we make object in this writing, as some biological linguistics studies (See: Geoffrey Sampson, Scuole di linguistica  [Schools of linguistics], Mondadori, Milano 1983, pag. 211).

But we neglect the circumlocution used by Sampson, exactly because it is a circumlocution with the explanatory value, and, starting us to a glottotecnical treatment, we premise that the study of the etymology of a words, compound or simple , serves to realize everything how much concerns this word  on the synchronic level and on the diachronic level, analyzing the form with which it exists and lives in the system (and therefore in the lexical repertoire of this) during the same analysis, and investigating on its birth and on its vitality, into the time.

Biolinguistics and glottobiology, compared to the existence of the linguistic system in which they are present, are a recent creation, as we have said, but the elements that compose them, (biolinguistics for the first and glottobiology for the second), have a multimillenary vitality.

In fact in the formation of the term biolinguistics we have in composition the term bio– and the term linguistics.

Now we observe that

1) Bio- is in some compound nouns, derived from the Greek or modernly formed, and it means «life», «living being»  and similar. The Greek βίoς = « mode of life »;

2) lingu- in physiological sense points out the muscular movable organ (Engl. tongue), that is systematized in the oral hollow and therefore above the glottal region. In the man, besides the tactile, gustatory, masticatory function and of the swollowing (in common with the other superior vertebrates), it also has the function to articulate the language. Italian uses the term ‘lingua’ for pointing out the system of articulated distinctive and significant sounds (phonemes), its lexical elements, that are the words and the locutions (lexemes and syntagms), and the grammatical forms (morphemes). Just as such a system, vocal language is approved and used by an ethnic political and cultural community, as mean of communication, for the expression and for the exchange of the thoughts and feelings. The characters of a language are such as to constitute an organism historically determined with phonetic morphological and syntactic laws.

3) – istics [deriv. of –ist + the suffix – ics] is the female substantival form of the adjectival suffix – istic. The suffix –ist, from Fr. -iste [Lat. -ista;  Grec. -ιστής] is used for pointing out some names of people that develop some particular activities or that follow some particular ideologies, generally connected with the Italian nouns in – issimo and with the Italian verbs in – izzare;  the suffix – ics [ from Lat. – cus; Grec. -ικός] is used for deriving some adjectives from nouns.

Now considered the meaning of bio– and considered that the expert in linguistics is called linguist, the researcher that studies the synchronic linguistics especially (that is the language understood as the formal system of the human beings, functional to their communicative expression, keeping in mind of as it (the language) is to the moment in which it is described, a language, to which «hic et nunc» are peculiar conceptually), the term biolinguistics pushes us to further considerations.

In fact biolinguistics is a compound word of learned origin whose constitutive elements are prepared according to the Latin order [for example: It. Martedì (Engl. Tuesday)=Mars’ day], therefore its meaning is ‘linguistics of the life’ or ‘linguistics of the living beings’ or more precisely ‘discipline practised by the researchers of the language of the living beings.’ If it is invoked the Romance order, in the mintage of biolinguistics, this it would bring us to the meaning of ‘life of the linguistics’ or ‘biology of the linguistics’, expressions that would conduct us to other discourses that here we have neglected on purpose.

But to us it cannot escape that living beings are also animals, plants and for extension the whole nature and in a certain sense also the things, and that for them we use the term ‘language‘, voice that could produce ‘biolanguagist’ and ‘biolanguagistics’.  And then, lingu– (lingua), for its precise definition, that it  is said above, cannot be used for language whose metaphoricity is wide. We repeat that the science, that we call  linguistics, studies only the ‘human vocal language’, that is the ‘language’ to which it is applicable the saussurian distinction between ‘langue’ and ‘parole’.

The same Martinet, for avoiding confusions, in his Elements of general linguistics (Laterza, Bari 1977), writes:  “Linguistics is the scientific study of the human language” (p. 13), where with the precise statement ‘human language’ he allows to intend ‘language’ as ‘lingua’, excluding all the metaphoric uses of the word «language» (p. 14). In fact among the meanings of the word ‘language’ there is that of ‘lingua’ as system, but in the meaning of ‘lingua’ there are not all  those of language.

The existence of terms as ‘biolanguagistics’ and ‘biolanguagist’, derivable from two hypothetical terms as languagistics and languagist, would be more legitimate and more reasonable. There is not any presence of that redundance contained in ‘biolinguist’ and ‘biolinguistics’, in fact if with ‘lingu(a)’ we call a system of signs belonging to human living beings, why  to premise bio- to this word ? Linguistics is worth ‘biological linguistics’.

Now, if we analyze glottobiology, that is, also it, a learned word, we see that, in the formation of this term, the parts, that compose it, are glottobiology, and they have the following meanings:
1) Glotto- = language as lingu(a);
2) – bio- = life;
3) – logy = science
the whole word, compounded in conformity with the Latin order of the constitutive elements, means ‘science that studies the life of the glotta‘, or ‘speech on the life of the language as lingua system‘.  The meaning of ‘language as lingua system’ or of ‘glotta’ naturally  is what emerges from this work.

Concluding,

1 – if we consider the valid long tradition of the studies of glottology;

2 – if we consider as fundamental fact that the language is a phenomenon of psicophonetics  and that the glottis is the point of departure (or of articulation) of the vocal signs, that belong to the  human vocal language, while the tongue is one of the various accessories of that variable resonance box, of the phonic apparatus of the human body;

3 – If we consider important the contributions of biology, of physics, of chemistry of the neurosciences and of the neurolinguistics in the study of the language;

4 – if we think about the adherence that the term glottobiology has with sociobiology;

5 – if we consider that there is in the term glottobiology , as it is true, a great glottotechnical correctness, thing that there isn’t in the term biolinguistics;

6 – if we think about the numerous group of compound words with glott – or with – glott -, lemmatized and frequented in scientific field enough;

the correctness of linguist and of glottologist invites us to discard the term ‘biolinguistics’ and to choose the use of  ‘glottobiology’ for pointing out the study of the biological bases of the human articulated language (as human vocal system, i.e. ‘lingua’).
